What about props?
I post which props will be used for class every Sunday in my newsletter and on the online classes page.
Possible props might include the following:
Yoga Mat — Any standard yoga mat will do. Here is a simple yoga mat that would work for practice. If you do not have one, practicing on a towel or carpet is just fine.
Bolster — The cheapest and most Kaiut-friendly bolsters online can be found here. Just be sure to remove 1/3 of the cotton filling to get your bolster practice-ready. Occasionally, two bolsters are required for practice, but we can adapt the sequences if you only have one. You can substitute a rolled blanket, pillow, or couch cushion for a bolster.
Block — Any standard yoga block will do. In Kaiut, we work with heavy, wooden blocks that are different dimensions than any on the market currently. However, here is a decently close option. Occasionally, two blocks are required for practice. We can adapt the sequences for you if you only have one. You can substitute a stack of books for a block.
Strap — Any standard yoga strap will do. Here is an inexpensive option. You can substitute a belt, tie, or dog leash for a strap.
Spot at the wall — Some sequences require legs up the wall, and sometimes we do standing postures with our hands on the wall. Using a door or window is fine as well.
Chair — Access to a chair will be valuable for some practitioners, particularly those with sensitivity to sitting and kneeling on the floor. A couch or the edge of a bed will work also, but please ensure that your seat is not on wheels.
What about bolsters?
Bolsters come in so many different shapes and sizes that it can be a bit confusing to choose the right one for your practice. In this Video, Beth gives an overview of different bolster and pillow options that you can use.
The right size, weight, density, shape and substitutes in case you don’t have any bolsters at home!
What days do you change the sequences you teach?
Our schedule consists of 5 separate Kaiut sequences, 2 specialized Kaiut sequences, two Slow Flow sequences, and one Yin Yoga sequence per week.
Kaiut classes are broken down as follows:
Sequence A : Monday
Sequence B : Tuesday
Sequence C : Wednesday
Sequence D : Thursday
Sequence E : Friday
Kaiut Foundations : Saturday
Special Topics : Sunday

I prefer to watch the teacher demonstrate the poses. Why don’t you demonstrate in Kaiut?
Although from time to time it is helpful for a teacher to demonstrate a posture that works with more complex/new alignment, a teacher demonstrating a pose gives students a mental image of what that shape “should” look like. This means that students start to think their way into the shape rather than feel their way into it. This is where injury occurs.
Each individual’s system is unique, and that is to be respected. Forcing ourselves into a “correct” shape is an act of aggression on our system that leads to injury and impoverishes the benefits of the pose. Regardless of our best intentions as students, we tend to overdo things and disguise self-competition under the name of self-betterment.
Even if you are a visual learner, this doesn’t mean you can’t practice Kaiut. The other students in the class each have their own distinct shape in every pose. Look at the other folks in class (not just one person) to see the variety. Then use that information as a way to find a variation that optimizes the work for your specific system. If you are struggling, ask your teacher for clarification or help.
This listening-focused way of presenting the sequences encourages students to practice their listening skills rather than relying heavily on visual referencing. Being in a live class rather than watching a recording allows students who have questions and/or are primarily visual learners to have personalized guidance from the teacher.
All Kaiut Special Topics, Slow Flow, and Yin yoga classes are demonstration based practices where the teacher is practicing while teaching.
Zoom
How does Zoom work?
We use the video conference meetup site Zoom to host our online classes. Never used it? Don’t worry, it’s easy and free! Just create a Zoom profile before your first class.
When you sign up for class, you receive a link that connects you to the date-and-time-specific conference page. We will tell you what props are required for class in an email the day of, and you will be expected to log in 5-10 minutes prior to class time for roll to be taken.
You will need a device with a camera that is connected to Wifi.
Students are encouraged to find a space for practice that minimizes distraction, has acceptable lighting, and gives room for reasonable movement.
Do I need to buy a Zoom account?
NO, you do not need to pay for a Zoom account. You only pay for an account if you want to host sessions yourself that last longer than 40 minutes. To take a class with Tucker Yoga, all you have to do is open a free account on Zoom to participate.
Do I need a camera to participate?
YES, you do. Kaiut yoga is a highly personalized practice, and we need to see and hear you in order to adapt the practice to your needs. Thank you for understanding.
How do I set up my camera so that you can see me?
You will need to set up your computer, tablet, or phone so that you can be seen clearly and you can look to the screen as needed. Place the device on an elevated surface, have the it farther away from you to capture more in the frame, and try to angle the device so the camera points down.
If you are using a tablet or smartphone:
Try placing something in front of the device that you can lean it against, tipping it forward so the camera points down
Anchor it with something behind it so it doesn't just fall flat on its face
Alternatively, you could purchase an adjustable mount like this one for tablets.
Play with it and see what works, but know that it will be ok if it's not perfect.
Helpful Tips
CAMERA:
For our live Yoga classes, if possible, place the camera about 6 feet away and at least 3 feet high off the floor, in a way that shows all of your mat and body as you move through the classes.
Ideally, the camera should be positioned to show your body from the side or the front; if possible, change it each class so we can get a better sense of how your body is in each pose.
CLOTHES:
Please wear clothes that contrast with the color of your mat and, if possible, are not too dark or loose-fitting. This will make it easier for me to observe you during practice. If you have long hair, please tie it up during practice for the same reason. The idea is that your teacher can see your body in the clearest possible way. What the teacher is able to see is extremely important as it informs cueing and teaching.
Wear clothes that allow you to move and that will keep you warm.
AudiO:
You need to be able to hear your teacher as they guide you through the classes so make sure your speaker is at a good volume.
All students will be muted after our check in time at the beginning of class. When prompted as you sign on to Zoom, please grant permission for the host to unmute you so that we can easily communicate during class. You are always welcome to unmute yourself when you have questions or need specific guidance. If you have granted permission for the host to unmute you, then you need only wave at the camera and we will be able to unmute you without you having to leave your mat.
Props:
Have all your props within reach.
Should I mute myself during class? How do I do that?
When you join the Zoom meeting, be sure to press join with camera and sound capabilities so we can greet one another as you log in! Don't worry, we will be there to help troubleshoot any technical issues.
After our initial greeting, we will mute everyone for class and unmute folks one-at-a-time in order to check in and get more feedback from you about how your system is responding to the work.
Check out the video below for a full tutorial on muting in Zoom.
Is Zoom a safe platform to use?
Zoom was once thought to pose a security threat due to having its calls routed through Chinese servers.
Zoom responded to this by changing its protocols so that a host can choose to have sessions routed through US-based servers. That means the risk of a foreign government strong-arming Zoom for access to information on our sessions is no longer a threat.
All versions of Zoom 5.0 and higher utilize GCM Encryption to protect user data.
Technical Issues
My sound and/or video won’t start…Help!
Check out the video below for a full tutorial.
The teacher’s sound won’t come through on my end. What do I do?
It’s ok! This happens from time-to-time. To fix it, try the following:
First, (this may sound silly, but it happens a lot) make sure your device has the volume turned up!
If that wasn’t the issue, try quitting Zoom and then signing back on. It’s simple, but this is almost always an instant fix.
Still having issues? Reach out to info@tuckeryoga.com, and we can set up a time troubleshoot together.
I just want to see the teacher, not everyone in class. How do I do that?
Check out the video below for a full tutorial.
I keep getting text message message alerts during class. How do I silence them?
If you are on a smartphone, please put your device in “Do Not Disturb” mode to prevent sound notifications and phone calls from disturbing your class experience.
To silence notifications on your laptop, check out the video below for a full tutorial.
My internet is fussy. How can I make sure it’s working at its best?
To improve the quality of your class, please stay close to your internet router, turn off other devices, and close any other apps and/or browsers that your device is running.
It is also very helpful to spring clean your device, deleting old and unused files and apps. Back up your photos and videos to a hard drive or to a cloud for safe keeping, then remove them from your computer. Remember to check your deleted files and select “permanently delete” or they will remain on your device for 30 days. Also be sure you empty your “Trash” bin.
One app that I personally love is Clean My Mac. It’s worth the investment, as it gives you real time readings of your memory and RAM usage and helps you scan for junk files and duplicates to delete. I use mine at least once a week to clear room on my device. It keeps the internet juices flowing freely.
Kaiut Video Library + The Archives
I have an account to take live classes. Why doesn’t that work for the Library/Archives?
The Library and the Archives are on a completely system from the live class registration system.
So... register yourself a new account with the Library or Archives, and you will be good to go!
How many classes are in the Library/Archives, and how often do they change?
LIBRARY: At all times there are six recorded Kaiut sequences in the Video Library. Three new Kaiut sequences are cycled in each week, and the three oldest are cycled out, so the content stays fresh.
ARCHIVES: The Archives are home to every Kaiut Sequence 1-100, Kaiut Soft Series 1-100, Kaiut Special Topics, Kaiut Foundations, Slow Flow, and Yin Yoga class recordings ever made. Five new Soft Series sequences, one new Special Topics class, one new Kaiut Foundations class, two new Slow Flow classes, and one new Yin Yoga class per week are added to the Archives.
How do I manage my Library/Archives account?
You can manage your account from any page on our site by clicking the “My Account” button. This button is in the top, left-hand corner of each page if you are on a computer. If you are on a mobile device, the button is located in the bottom, left-hand corner of the browser.
How do I upgrade from the Library to the Archives?
You can upgrade your account anytime by simply signing up for the Archives.
Unfortunately, the system thinks you are starting a second subscription, so it will charge you the full $40. But this is ok because then we will cancel your Library membership from the back end and send you a prorated refund based on how long it’s been since your last Library payment.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You may cancel your subscription to the Library or Archives at any time by simply clicking the “My Account” button located at the top left of any page (bottom left if you’re on a mobile device).
From there, you click “Subscriptions.” Then select the subscription you wish to cancel and click “Cancel Subscription.”
Done!
